Longest outdoor preach-world record set by
the Revd Eric Delve
MAIDSTONE, UK -- The vicar of St Luke’s, Maidstone,
the Revd Eric Delve, preached for 24-hour, setting
the world record for the Longest outdoor preach.
Photo: Mr Delve chose a busy junction
in the town for his sermon, which took points from Genesis
to Revelation — “even those, like Leviticus and Deuteronomy,
without much narrative”, he said. “We billed it as creation
to the end of the world in 24 hours.”

He preached continuously for the first two
hours, starting at midday on Friday. After that he took one
ten-minute comfort break on the hour and just one 20-minute
interval for lunch. At 6 a.m., he was almost overcome with
exhaustion.
Crowds gathered at times, sometimes hostile.
“Some were being insulting and rude and shouting things,
and at other times people were confrontational. Some we managed
to win over by building relationships as they walked past,”
he said. “One young lad started insulting me and then came
back and said, ‘I didn’t know you was doing it for 24 hours.
Respect, mate.’”
Listeners ranged from never fewer than ten to
the 150 who cheered Mr Delve and counted him down at the end.
He was hoping to raise £20,000 through sponsorship
to help disadvantaged children through Compassion UK, the
chosen charity of the Detling Christian conference, of which
he is the organiser and speaker.
Revd Eric Delve: “There is no previous
world record at the moment for the longest outdoor preach.
Twenty-four hours is a marker we’ve set down for the rest
of the world,” he said.
