Thousands of people crowded into a field beside
Carnival beach in Ancol, in north Jakarta, to participate
in the record-breaking attempt for the Most
sky lanterns flown simultaneously.
The participants included people of all ages,
hailing from different communities, ethnic groups and even
countries.
With the night unusually clear and still
for the early weeks of Indonesia's rainy season, the crowd
cheered as each of the fragile, glowing paper balloons took
to the sky.
W.S. Yong, Event chiarman, said: "This
is basically to inspire our members all around the world that
with AFC anything can happen, it's basically to change their
mind set."
The flying lantern is a Chinese tradition. It
is essentially a paper bag with a block of paraffin with a
wick suspended by wire across the opening. The lantern lifts
when the wick is lit, warming the air inside like a hot air
balloon.
The previous Guinness world record of 3,682
set in Colombia last Jan. 10 had been shattered.
Freedom Faithnet Global said it organized
world record attempt for the Most
sky lanterns flown simultaneously as a symbol of hope
and prayer as part of annual celebrations. This year's celebrations
have an environmental focus.
The world record attempt for the Most
sky lanterns flown simultaneously provided a spectacular
sight for miles around as thousands of flickering lanterns
drifted skywards.
